What is the Sustainable Program for Irrigation and Groundwater Use?
The Sustainable Program for Irrigation and Groundwater Use (SPRING) is an add-on module that evaluates responsible water management practices at farm level. Good agricultural practices are not only about products, but also about the sustainable use of natural resources such as water.
Designed to complement the Integrated Farm Assurance (IFA) standard, SPRING is a voluntary, farm-level water management tool that addresses critical water stewardship challenges in agriculture.
Core topics in SPRING v2 include:
- Assessment of water risks and objectives
- Assessment of legal compliance
- Management and use of water resources
- Environmental management: protecting water sources
Applicable to farms of all sizes, with or without irrigation, and in regions with varying levels of water availability, SPRING uses a risk-based assessment approach aligned with international sustainability initiatives such as the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Recognized by WWF Spain as among the top farm-level water certification options, the SPRING add-on is implemented in over 30 countries worldwide, supporting responsible water use across agricultural supply chains.
Efficient and responsible water management has a significant impact on both farm productivity and mitigating water risks. Monitoring water use, protecting water sources, and implementing effective irrigation practices create value throughout the supply chain. As a management tool, SPRING helps producers establish and maintain robust water management system by defining clear requirements for responsible water use and stewardship in primary production.
